Conscious Wellness at the Heart of Victoria

Ten minutes earlier, I had been standing at the edge of Victoria’s Inner Harbour, the afternoon sun bright off the water, sail boats gliding effortlessly, and the immersive Tea at The Empress fresh in my memory. A friend had been recommending The Spa Magnolia for as long as I could remember — the kind of friend who does not suggest things lightly — and so here I was, settled into the reception area, the harbour entirely forgotten.

Curved shelving holds a curated selection of organic skincare, a large magnolia mural anchors the wall behind the desk, and an ornate chandelier draws the eye upward over a space that has been considered down to the last detail.

Owner and Director Paula Veenema introduced herself before my treatment. She has been here for over two decades, and the loyalty she has built in that time is not incidental — nearly nine in ten clients return, and the reviews border on unanimous. Visitors come from Vancouver, from across the country, and from abroad. “I am just as passionate as I was initially,” she told me. “My aim has always been to embrace what an honour it is to provide experiences that can be genuinely transformative for our guests, and to do so with gratitude.”

She walked me down the arched corridor toward the treatment rooms, the polished tile and white arches drawing us further in. What I found at the end of it: exposed heritage brick, muted grey walls, a warmed table dressed in patterned linens, and candles reflected in a floor-length mirror. Seven rooms of this calibre exist within the spa, each supported by a relaxation lounge designed to ease you gently back into the world when your time here is done.

The menu extends well beyond the facial room, and that breadth is deliberate. The Spa Magnolia takes a whole-body approach to wellness — the Rest, Restore and Relax treatment pairs a warming arnica and menthol back scrub with jade stone massage and a 30-minute organic facial, addressing tension and skin in a single 90-minute session. The Himalayan Salt Treatment works from head to toe, combining mineral-rich stone massage with alpha-hydroxy exfoliation and deep hydration. Expectant mothers are looked after through the Pregnant Pause, a 75-minute ritual of footbath, scalp massage, and nourishing facial designed for the second and third trimester. A generous selection of facials offers both results-driven treatments and certified organic options, all thoughtfully designed to deliver radiant, glowing skin while providing a truly nurturing experience.

Paula’s product standards are as deliberate as the architecture. The Spa Magnolia works exclusively with endota, Comfort Zone, and Jane Iredale — each dermatologist-recommended, clinically tested, cruelty-free, and formulated without fillers, parabens, or synthetic dyes. “What goes on your body goes inside your body,” she said. “The Spa Magnolia merges luxury with organic health and beauty treatments with the best nature has to offer, backed by scientific research.”

What also stayed with me was the ability to create a space that offers stillness, care, and a true sense of escape from the pace of everyday life. Stress and feeling overwhelmed can affect everyone differently, and in today’s world there seems to be no shortage of either.

A treatment here is more than simply a service — it’s an opportunity to pause, reset, and let go of tension you may not even realize you’ve been carrying. Creating an environment where people feel genuinely cared for, relaxed, and restored is what continues to make this spa so successful.
I left with my shoulders lower than they had been in weeks, my skin luminous, and a quietness in my body that the harbour air only deepened on the walk back. Someone builds something like this with genuine intention — and then do
